On Luke Cage

Throughout your presentation on Thursday you made a lot of interesting points about life, but the one that stuck out to me the most was your phrase: "Filing the gaps in my damn education." This stuck with me because that's exactly what I didn't do in high school that I'm trying to do in college. For this post today I decided to watch Marvel's Luke Cage. The show is filled with characters of varying educational levels all at different successful parts of their lives.
Luke Cage the main character has just gotten out of prison and is trying to get his life back together. He hasn't had any wonderful chances in his life to go to college and try and make a name for himself in education. Because of this he has trouble finding good jobs in Harlem and can hardly seem to keep a couple jobs just to pay his rent a month late. Though Luke Cage is in a dangerous world he would have been able to make a name for himself without criminal involvement like other characters in the show have been able to.

Another main character is Pops. Pops has been living in Harlem his whole life and appears to be a proponent of educating children. Throughout the show Pops is a proponent of children having a childhood and growing to be functioning adults instead of growing to be gangsters or whatever else they might grow up (or not grow up) to be. Pops is a positive influence on the community and tries to help the kids of the community grow to be functioning adults.

The third character that stuck out was Misty Knight. She has been educated and because of that was able to move up in the world. She was able to become a detective for the N.Y.P.D. because she filled the gaps in her education and got what she needed to become a detective. Out of all the characters in the show she seems as one of the few characters that truly earned their position without any corruption and by working hard and becoming something of herself. Unlike most of the characters in this show she is genuinely trying to make the world a better place and using everything in her power to do so. Luke attempts this, but without his super strength and invulnerability he wouldn't be able to do anything. Luke lacks the education and the power to make a real difference in his community and though his super strength does come in handy in helping for short times it doesn't come in handy when he's trying to save the world.

All that being said I think the show really reinforced your point on education and I will hopefully fill "the damn gaps in my education."
